Corrosion, both internal and external, can result in significant weakening of tank roofs posing danger for personnel taking product samples from tank roofs.  After identifying flexing in a tank roof from which product samples were taken, a customer considered one of their tank roofs to be suspect.

The customer stopped personnel access to the roof until its integrity could be verified.  They then asked IRISNDT’s UK personnel to evaluate if robotic systems could perform the needed visual inspections and thickness measurements.  After the route that operators had to take for obtaining product samples was mapped, IRISNDT’s UK personnel performed the robotics remote visual and ultrasonic thickness testing.

The robotic visual inspection included the manway, gantry, relief outlets and dipping points. What was the result? A safe sampling path and peace of mind.  See more on robotics in https://www.irisndt.com/ca/robotic-remote-inspection/
