  7. 3D Laser Scanning & Accurate Data Capture

IRISNDT deploy the latest ultra-portable laser scanners to enable us to capture fast, straightforward and accurate measurements of complex structures, pipelines and vessels. Our scanners are truly mobile and robust for fast, secure and reliable scanning.

Handheld 3D scanners are also utilized by IRISNDT; these are easy-to-use and generate highly accurate and repeatable results—even in difficult environments and with complex surfaces. Ideal for pipelines, headers and manifolds.

Scanners are used both internally and externally for surveys of tanks and vessels. Internal scans are best for insulated vessels and those obscured by piping and ironwork. Internal scanning also has the benefit of capturing elements such as a tank floor whereas external scanning can be carried out with the vessel in service.

Recorded scans are combined to produce a 3D model of the item scanned. This is usually then converted to a 3D mesh to facilitate analysis. A powerful feature is the ability to compare the scan data (actual measurements) with a reference model to identify bulges, dents, floor ripples and so forth. The scan images also provide a good visual record of the item scanned.

IRISNDT APPLIES 3D LASER SCANNING FOR:

  • Pipeline surveys incorporating pipe work software to accurately analyze pipe surface condition and assess corrosion size and depth
  • Reverse engineering of components for which there are no construction plans and/or CAD data available
  • Accurate 3D CAD documentation of complex interiors of ships engine rooms, cars as a basis for planning of modifications
  • Precise 3D documentation and dimensional inspections of large and complex components such as rotor blades, turbines, intricate machined components and ship propellers
  • Storage tank, pressure vessel and coke drum surveys including dimensional checks, settlement assessments, out of round, tilt, bulge, ripple and volume calculations

ADVANTAGES

  • Good repeatability (items can be rescanned at regular intervals to determine changes occurring during use)
  • The scan files are filtered and combined to produce a point cloud image of the structure
  • The data can be analysed in detail and selected images captured to show specific features or the surface condition
  • The software can measure as-built dimensions, out of roundness and other distortions as well as measurement of floor slope, settlement and volume

LIMITATIONS

  • External scans require reasonably calm conditions with no precipitation, dust, steam or mist to diffuse the laser beam
  • Bright, direct sunlight may cause difficulties with some scans
  • Internal scans are generally sheltered but require preparation for entry and surface cleaning if there are heavy deposits
