IR192, CO60, SE75

IRISNDT inspects as-fabricated pressure vessels and piping welds routinely in fabrication shops and within plants.  We also use radiography shadow shots to consistently inspect process piping, pressure vessels and valves for metal losses.  We provide an easily viewed and permanent record of the inspected component.

Radiography is a non-destructive test method that utilizes electromagnetic energy (radiation) from X-rays or gamma rays; it detects both surface and internal discontinuities. Radiographs are two-dimensional negative images (projections) of objects on radiation sensitive films/plates.

Cobalt 60 and Iridium 192 are the more commonly used industrial gamma ray sources. The practical thickness limit for carbon steel gamma radiography is approximately 2.5″ for Iridium 192 and 9″ for Cobalt 60. Se-75 gamma radiography is used to inspect thin wall small diameter butt welds.  Se-75 is excellent for congested work sites since much smaller restricted areas are required.  Se-75 has a practical thickness limit for steel of approximately 0.75”.

ADVANTAGES

  • Industrial radiographs are readily prepared and interpreted as required in field settings.
  • Industrial radiography is the most widely used method of volumetric inspection for pressure vessel and piping welds fabricated to meet ASME requirements.
  • The images are durable and readily stored for future comparison or audits.
  • The equipment is portable and light enough to easily take onto scaffolding.

LIMITATIONS

    • Access to both sides of the test material is required
    • Physical space is required
    • Large areas adjacent to the component tested must be cleared from persons or items that may be affected by radiation.
    • Environmental conditions may compromise film quality; low temperatures may slow down production

Safety is a fundamental consideration when using radiation. Clearance of large areas adjacent to the component from persons or items that may be affected by radiation is required. A significant radiation dose can cause physical changes in the human body. Strict Federal and Provincial regulations, coupled with highly trained and qualified personnel ensure the safety of everyone.

Test results are interpreted in accordance with specifications or customer requirements. The customer receives the final radiographic film, a report and drawings (if required) identifying the location of discontinuities.
