IRISNDT’s robotic inspection groups in Canada, the UK and the USA now deploy 3D localization. What does this mean? Inspection personnel create a 3D digital twin of the pressure vessel to be inspected before the inspection. Then, since the robot uses on-board laser and odometry data to accurately position itself, all NDT measurements and visual inspection pictures are accurately positioned in the pressure vessel to ensure excellent future location repeatability.

The figure illustrates these inspections.  The left side of the image shows a pressure vessel digital twin.  The robot is illustrated at the lower left of the digital vessel with its camera field of view directed towards the nozzles.  The lower right part of the figure shows the internal nozzle from the camera’s field of view.  Manually directed photographs would be challenged to meet this exact repeatability.
